Sri Lanka has won the toss and decided to let Pakistan field in the first semi-final match of the World Twenty20 Cup tournament.Pakistan V Sri Lanka 1st Semi-Final T20 World Cup 2012

The Pakistani and Sri Lankan captains have just exchanged their team sheets.

Hafeez calls tails and loses the toss. Big cheers. Sri Lanka have decided to bat.

Jayawardene thinks the track will help his spinners in the latter half of the game.

Sri Lanka dropped Akila Dananjaya and brought in Rangana Herath while Pakistan replaced Abdul Razzaq with Sohail Tanvir.

It will be a battle of attrition between the two sides who had met in the final of the 2009 edition of the tournament in England where Pakistan emerged victorious.

The scene is entirely different this time around as Mohammed Hafeez and his boys will be facing a formidable Sri Lankan outfit in their own backyard.

What will be the most interesting thing to see is battle between the top quality spin departments of both sides.

Their confidence on a high after the big win over Australia, a supremely talented Pakistan will come out all guns blazing against hosts Sri Lanka in the first semi-final of the ICC World Twenty20 on Thursday.Sri Lanka Vs Pakistan

It will be a battle of attrition between the two sides who had met in the final of the 2009 edition of the tournament in England where Pakistan emerged victorious.

The scene is entirely different this time around as Mohammad Hafeez and his boys will be facing a formidable Sri Lankan outfit in their own backyard.

What will be the most interesting thing to see is battle between the top quality spin departments of both sides.

The most intriguing of the battles will be between two mystery spinners — Ajantha Mendis and Saeed Ajmal.

While Mendis has roared back to form during this edition of World T20 having taken nine wickets in five games which also include an astonishing six for eight against Zimbabwe, Ajmal has been a consistent performer for Pakistan in the past few years.

However, Pakistan, which has the likes of Hafeez, Imran Nazir, Nasir Jamshed and the Akmal brothers, are better players of spin bowling. And it will be interesting to watch as to what tricks can Mendis pull out of his bag on a slow R Premadasa track that has been assisting spinners.

Pakistan, on the otherhand, will be expecting the trio of Ajmal, Hafeez and young left-arm spinner Raza Hasan to ask difficult questions to Sri Lankan top order that has three world class batsmen in Tillekaratne Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara.Sri Lanka Vs Pakistan Live Streaming T20 World Cup 2012

Dishan, Jayawardene and Sangakkara all have been among runs and know the Premadasa track like the back of their hand.

The only advantage that Pakistan will have over Sri Lanka is the number of matches that they have played at this venue.

Having played three matches and won two, Hafeez and his men have an idea of what to expect from the Premadasa surface.

The Lankans, on the other hand, have played all their matches at Hambantota and Pallekele, where the seamers got more help due to the conditions.

On the slow Premadasa track, one would expect Lasith Malinga to bowl blockhole deliveries more often as length balls are likely to get punished.

The only concern for Pakistan will be Shahid Afridi’s form. The all-rounder has batted quite irresponsibly in the tournament so far. Even Hafeez’s ploy of sending him up the order hasn’t worked as he has thrown away his wicket.

Afridi’s bowling also hasn’t been upto the mark. Although he has got a few wickets, his bowling has been pretty inconsistent and the batsmen have went after him using the pace of his deliveries.

As for the Lankans, the only weak link has been all-rounder Thisara Perera and vice-captain Angelo Mathews.

Mathews has bowled 12 overs in the tournament so far and has claimed only one wicket giving away 81 runs. In batting too, he hasn’t got much chance to show his prowess as Sangakkara, Jayawardene and Dilshan have done bulk of the job.

But come tomorrow, the Sri Lanka will expect to Mathews to fire as there is a chance that law of averages can catch up with the top three of the Lankan line-up.

In all, there is little to choose between the two teams as they lock horns for a place in Sunday’s final. (PTI)

Pakistan will make its fourth consecutive semifinal appearance in today’s ICC World Twenty20 semi-final being played at Premadasa Stadium against hosts Sri Lanka that played the semis of three World cups in last five years.Pakistan vs Sri Lanka 1st T20 Semi Final Live Cricket Score Today
Pakistan reserved their spot at the Premadasa Stadium for one of the semi-final after a smashing Super Eight victory over Australia at the same venue on Tuesday. Pakistan dominated this match by playing 18 overs by spinners.

Home side Sri Lanka have all the requisite personnel to employ similar spin tactics in this match, on a pitch likely to reward them. While Sri Lanka can choose between Ajantha and Jeevan Mendis, Akila Dananjaya, Rangana Herath – and opener Tillekeratne Dilshan as a part-time option. Pakistan are also even more blessed with possibilities.

Pakistan will hit the ground today to improve its record against the hosts, as the country won six out of nine Twenty20 matches against Sri Lanka that achieved victory in the remaining three.

Pakistan’s all-rounder Shoaib Malik is the most prominent batsman against the hosts with 122 runs; while, Umar Gul grabbed the maximum number of Islanders’ wickets.

In contrast, Kumar Sangakkara was the leading batsman who unnerved Pak bowlers with 171 runs. Fast bowler Lasith Malinga also put Pakistani batsmen on tenterhooks on several occasions.

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni admitted that devising a strategy without knowing the result of the Australia versus Pakistan game will be foolhardy as that will help them chart their course of action.

In case Pakistan (-0.426), who are a shade better than India (-0.452) in terms of net run-rate happen to win against Australia, Dhoni and his men will then have to win comprehensively against the South Africans in order to make it to the last four.

If Australia maintain a clean slate in the ‘Super Eight’ by beating Pakistan, the equation will be a lot easier for India as a win will be good enough. Even in case of a defeat against South Africa, India should ensure that they don’t lose by a big margin as the net run rate will come into play with three teams tied with one win each.

Pakistan

For years now, Pakistan teams have had two settings - the 'look like they could beat anyone' setting and the 'look like they have never played cricket before' setting. Worryingly, they have slipped into the second mode. Against South Africa last week they got away with an inept batting performance, but against India on Sunday they didn't. The heavy loss leaves them needing a win against the Australians, as both South Africa and India can easily surpass their net run rate in the second game.

Pakistan have made the fewest changes to their side over the course of the tournament and against Australia they will probably stick with the same side which played India and South Africa, meaning a four-pronged spin attack and no place for the left arm seam of Sohail Tanvir.

Pakistan will need to beat Australia today in order to have a good chance of qualifying for the semi-finals. A loss will mean that they  need to wait for the result of the match between India and South Africa to learn their fate.Pakistan vs Australia T20 WC 2012 Live Streaming

Pakistan did beat Australia in the three-match Twenty20 series that took place in the UAE but given the team’s – and all-rounder Shane Watson’s – form in the World Twenty20, the former champions will need more than merry memories of the past to sneak a win.

“We had some reasonable performances against Australia just recently,” said Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore. “But they have played very well in the last three weeks or so, in their warm-up games and in this tournament so far. We are used to playing them and we have done okay against them recently. It will be a good test, they are a good side.”

Meanwhile, Australia do not even need to win in order to progress, as they will qualify for the semi-finals, unless Pakistan can impose the sort of thrashing George Bailey’s men have normally dealt out.

“I am not too fussed about settling scores,” said Bailey. “What we are keen to do is continue playing good cricket. There’s no doubt that in this format, momentum and confidence are really big factors.

“We were really confident going into the game against South Africa just on the back of how well we were playing, so it will be nice to play well against Pakistan just to keep that going.”

Pakistan vs Australia T20 World Cup 2012 Live Cricket Score Today

COLOMBO: After being defeated by India in their second Super Eights match, team Pakistan is in a critical do or die situation as they will face Australia in their last Super Eight match in World Twenty 20 in Colombo while India will take on South Africa Tuesday.Pakistan vs Australia T20 World Cup 2012 Live Cricket Score Today

The Pakistan vs Autralia match will begin at 3:00 pm and India vs South Africa at 7:00 pm according to Pakistan Standard Time.

Pakistan will have to device a comprehensive strategy to come up with an impeccable performance against the unbeaten Australia, which is almost assured a semi-final berth after the commanding eight-wicket victory over South Africa in their last game on Sunday.

Pakistan will face an exit from the tournament in case of losing match against Australia, therefore, Pakistan is in a do or die situation to gain a safe place in the semis.

The fight for the second semi-final slot from Group 2 is indeed intriguing as both India and Pakistan have a fair chance of making their place in the semis, with the Aussies enjoying a healthy run-rate of +1.712.

In case Pakistan (-0.426), who are a shade ahead of India (-0.452) in terms of net run-rate happen to win against Australia, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men will then have to win comprehensively against the South Africans in order to make it to the last four.

South Africa has lost both their matches in contrasting manner - a close defeat to Pakistan and a comprehensive one against Australia.

Even if they win on Tuesday, it is an unlikely proposition for AB de Villiers's side to seal a semi-final berth as their inferior run-rate (-0.605) at this stage of the tournament makes their case weak.
